Ohio River, Steubenville, Ohio c-1988.
That's West Virginia on the left, Ohio on the right; and smoke stacks everywhere. The two big industries in the upper Ohio Valley are steel and power generating. There seem to be another set of tall stacks around every bend of the highway. One of the tallest in the world, 305 meters! is at a power plant up-river, where my father-in-law once worked. I don't know if the steel plant in the picture, is still in operation, but everyone still needs good old, dirty, coal fired electricity - for now.
