Wayne County. Courthouse, Wooster Ohio, 1877-79. March, 1990.

I ran this picture several years ago in [livejournal.com profile] joebanks. Civic pride is what stands out; now and when it was built. In 1880 there were just over 40,000 people in Wayne Co. The city of Wooster had a popultion, just over 7,000! Yet they pooled their resources to build this pile. But reading a description of what was produced in Wayne Co. in the 19th century and what is found is a prosperous people.

"..produced in wheat, 886,580 bushels;
oats, 942,657;
corn, 947,969;
tobacco, 147,685 lbs.;
butter, 1,039,793;
wine, 1;312 gallons.."

-over a million lbs of butter!
